The German people (German: Deutsche) are people from, or descended from residents of, Germany. Within Germany, Germans are defined by citizenship (Federal Germans, Bundesdeutsche), distinguished from people of German ancestry (Deutschstämmige). Historically, in the context of the German Empire (1871–1918) and later, German citizens (Imperial Germans, Reichsdeutsche) were distinguished from ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche).

Of approximately 100 million native speakers of German in the world, about 66–75 million consider themselves Germans. Peoples from other countries with a German-speaking majority or significant German-speaking population groups, such as Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, have developed their own national consciousness and usually do not identify themselves as Germans. There are an additional 80 million people of German ancestry mainly in the United States, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, France, Russia, Chile, Poland, Australia and Romania who most likely are not native speakers of German.

Thus, the total number of Germans worldwide lies between 66 and 160 million, depending on the criteria applied (native speakers, single-ancestry ethnic Germans, partial German ancestry, etc.). In the U.S., 43 million, or 15.2% of the population, identified as German American in the census of 2000. Although the percentage has declined, it is still more than any other ethnic group. According to the U.S. Census Bureau – 2006 American Community Survey, approximately 51 million citizens identify themselves as having German ancestry.

How do Germans dress differently than people in the US?
Q. Can you please provide some pictures of how people dress in Europe, compared to the US? I am in my early 30s, and will be dressed casually most of the time; I am about to embark on a 3 month stay in Germany at a very casual workplace. I have already read to avoid light colored jeans and white socks at all costs. What about sneakers when you're working out? Please advise, and links to pictures would be very helpful showing differences in casual wear between Americans and Germans. Thank you!

A. It's pretty similar, but in my experience attending a university there for a year, the men tend to wear less baggy, more fitted clothes, and the casual wear is a bit less, well, casual, than in the US. I'd avoid going out with white socks and basketball shoes, but for working out, I'm sure they're fine. I never visited a gym there, but I'm quite certain you'd have no problems. And buy shoes before you leave, because they (and other clothing items) tend to be more expensive there, considering the weak dollar and the 18% MwSt (VAT).
