Prayer is a form of religious practice that seeks to activate a volitional connection to some greater power in the universe through deliberate intentional practice. Prayer may be either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words, song, or complete silence. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creedal statement, or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person. There are different forms of prayer such as petitionary prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and worship/praise. Prayer may be directed towards a deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshiping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing sins or to express one's thoughts and emotions. Thus, people pray for many reasons such as personal benefit or for the sake of others. Most major religions involve prayer in one way or another. Some ritualize the act of prayer—requiring a strict sequence of actions, or placing a restriction on who is permitted to pray—while many teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any moment. Scientific studies regarding the use of prayer have mostly concentrated on its effect on the healing of sick or injured people. The efficacy of petition in prayer for physical healing to a deity has been evaluated in numerous studies, with contradictory results. There has been some criticism of the way the studies were conducted. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between the law of attraction and prayer? Q. That both seem to serve the same purpose. Is there a difference? The reason I ask is that if you think of something, or visualize something that you want, whether it be some object, and experience or and outcome; and you have faith that it will become, then isn't that the same energy as prayer? So, wouldn't that make prayer simply another concept of law of attraction? Are they both simply the power of the mind? Because I seem get the same results from both. Now that definitely changes the whole landscape, doesn't it? If we have the power to attract simply by the power of thought and imagination, then what does that say about prayer? Do you also overlap prayer with daily activities? Or do you mostly sit down and solely dedicate a certain amount of time to God alone. Or do you wish you prayed more? Or do you find prayer tedious and rather fill your day with good actions? What is your attitude toward prayer? And how do you pray? Asked by ayahoouser - Wed Nov 18 15:04:13 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Prayer shouldn't just be a ritualized activity that you do X amount of times at specific intervals. Yes, pray for your food and when you go to bed but after that you can pray to God as often as you like. When you see something that inspires appreciation for his works for example why not tell him? They don't all have to be long or any specific length. The Bible says to pray incessantly. I can't tell you how much time I devote to prayer because anything throughout the day could spur me to pray to God. :-) Edit: I'd also like to add that no where in the Bible does God forbid us from praying while on the go. Yes, there should be times that you give all your attention to God in prayer, but that doesn't mean you can't give God a quick "Thank [cont.] Answered by Darkranger85 - Wed Nov 18 15:12:39 2009 What are the differences and similarities between prayer and magic?
Q. I know prayer is regarded as a request and magic is regarded as a command, but I ask because in theory the command/request dichotomy stands up, but in practice I don't see commands and requests to be mutually exclusive. Couldn't both prayer and magic be commanding in nature as well as an expression of will, and couldn't both prayer and magic also be requests which include a strong sense of humility? It says "spellwork has its power from the harmony or the wizard with the Logos or creative energy of God" So in this sense it would seem that magic and prayer are similar. However, in practice there are two kinds of magic. (I am not an expert on this.) Invocational magic is where you call down spirits and demons to do your bidding. Incantational magic (the type in Harry Potter) involves the harmony with the powers of the universe, or God. The more in-touch you are with that power, or God the more power and better results that you will get from your spell. It is this type of magic that is somewhat like prayer. The Saints get better results become they have become one with God, their source. The words of the prayer may take the form of intercession, a hymn, incantation or a spontaneous utterance in the person's praying words. Secularly, the term can also be used in referring too "hope".
